Where it came from
Four Color #278, published by Dell Comics in 1950, features the first comic book appearance of the legendary cowboy actor Roy Rogers. During the golden age of Westerns, Dell Comics leveraged its licensing agreements to translate popular film and radio personas into illustrated adventures, aiming to capture the young audience that flocked to Saturday matinee serials.
The issue was illustrated by Albert Micale, a prolific artist known for his disciplined, realistic approach to the Western genre. Micale’s work on this title was designed to mirror the cinematic aesthetic of Rogers’s films, emphasizing action-oriented sequences and a clean, accessible layout that was a hallmark of the Dell publishing house during this period.
