Four Color #672

Four Color issue #672, published in 1956 by Dell Comics, is a notable installment in a prolific anthology series that served as a testing ground for various licensed properties and original characters. During this era, Dell Comics maintained a massive market share by focusing on family-friendly fare and adapting popular media, with the Four Color series acting as an umbrella title that allowed the publisher to experiment with new intellectual properties before granting them dedicated ongoing titles.

This specific issue features an early appearance of the iconic cartoon character Woody Woodpecker. The creative team leaned into the manic, slapstick energy that defined Walter Lantz’s animated shorts, utilizing a clear, accessible visual style intended to appeal to a broad demographic of young readers. The work was well-received at the time as a faithful extension of the animated medium into print, solidifying the character's presence in the mid-century comic landscape.
