Where it came from
Gal-Ben: Kabukichō no Yūrei, or Gal-Lunch: The Ghost of Kabukichō, emerged as part of the niche manga landscape focusing on gritty, urban-inspired subcultures. The series was designed to blend the neon-drenched aesthetic of Tokyo’s nightlife district with supernatural mystery, a stylistic choice aimed at readers interested in the intersection of modern street fashion and folklore. This specific issue, number two, continues the narrative established in the premiere, maintaining the series' signature visual style characterized by high-contrast ink work and detailed character costuming.
The creative team behind the series leaned into the 'gyaru' fashion subculture, using it as a foundational element to differentiate the characters within the crowded seinen and shonen market. By centering the story on the ghostly occurrences within the dense, labyrinthine streets of Shinjuku, the illustrators sought to create an atmosphere that felt both authentic to the location and surreal. Upon release, the series garnered attention from enthusiasts of urban fantasy manga who appreciated the deliberate, stylized depiction of Kabukichō’s late-night environment.
