Where it came from
Gambit & The X-Ternals #2, released in 1995, served as the second installment of a four-issue limited series tied to the expansive 'Age of Apocalypse' crossover event. Published by Marvel Comics, the series explored an alternate reality where Charles Xavier was killed prematurely, allowing the villainous Apocalypse to conquer North America. This specific title focused on Gambit leading a team of thieves into space to secure a powerful artifact known as the M'Kraan Crystal, reflecting the high-stakes, dystopian tone that defined the mid-90s X-Men publishing strategy.
The issue features scripting by Fabian Nicieza and interior art by Tony Daniel, who utilized the gritty, muscular aesthetic common to Marvel’s output during that era. The series was designed to showcase Gambit in a leadership role, differentiating him from his traditional portrayal within the main X-Men team. It was received as a key component of the wider event, which remained a popular touchstone for X-Men readers due to its radical reimagining of established character dynamics and its commitment to a serialized, long-form narrative structure.
