Where it came from
Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri is a Japanese fantasy light novel series written by Takumi Yanai and illustrated by Daisuke Izuka. The narrative explores the geopolitical and military consequences of a mysterious portal opening in Ginza, Tokyo, which leads to a parallel world inhabited by mythological creatures. The series began as an internet novel before being serialized in print, eventually leading to multiple spin-off manga adaptations and side stories like the Gate 0 series, which expands upon the experiences of characters within the established universe.
The artistic direction of the series, particularly in the manga adaptations, emphasizes a juxtaposition between modern Japanese Self-Defense Force technology and high-fantasy aesthetics. This design choice aims to ground the fantastical elements in a recognizable reality, reflecting the author's background as a former member of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force. While the series has garnered significant attention for its military-centric world-building, it has also been a subject of critical discussion regarding its political themes and depictions of international relations.
