Where it came from
Gate: Jietai - Kano Chi Nite, Kaku Tatakaeri, authored by Takumi Yanai, began as a web novel on the platform Arcadia before being serialized as a light novel series starting in 2010. This twenty-fourth volume serves as a significant installment in the manga adaptation illustrated by Satoru Sao, which began its run in AlphaPolis's Comic Gate magazine in 2011. The series explores the geopolitical and military tensions that arise when a mysterious portal opens in modern-day Ginza, connecting contemporary Japan to a fantasy realm populated by mythical creatures.
The narrative is noted for its blending of modern military procedural elements with high-fantasy tropes, a combination that has drawn both intrigue and critical discussion regarding its portrayal of international diplomacy and self-defense forces. Satoru Sao’s illustrative style focuses on maintaining a stark contrast between the gritty, tactical equipment of the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the ornate, magical aesthetics of the 'Special Region.' Issue 24 continues this detailed visual storytelling, maintaining the series' established aesthetic as it nears the conclusion of key story arcs.
