G.I. Combat #216

G.I. Combat #216, published by DC Comics in the spring of 1979, represents a notable entry in the long-running war anthology series. By the late 1970s, the title had become synonymous with the adventures of the Haunted Tank, featuring the spectral guidance of J.E.B. Stuart for a crew of American soldiers during World War II. The series maintained a loyal readership by balancing traditional military action with supernatural elements, a stylistic choice that distinguished it from the more grounded war comics of the era.

The creative direction for this period was largely driven by long-time writer Robert Kanigher, whose scripts were paired with the work of artist Sam Glanzman. Glanzman was highly regarded for his ability to render gritty, authentic-looking combat scenes, often drawing from his own experiences in the United States Navy. This issue reflects the established tone of the late-seventies DC war line, which sought to maintain the legacy of these classic characters while adapting to the shifting artistic sensibilities and narrative expectations of the bronze age of comic books.
