Where it came from
Released in November 1984 by Marvel Comics, G.I. Joe #29, titled 'Snake-Eyes: The Origin,' serves as a pivotal entry in the long-running series. Written by Larry Hama with art by Mike Vosburg, the issue was crafted to provide a definitive backstory for the franchise’s most enigmatic and popular character, Snake-Eyes. Amidst the height of the G.I. Joe toy line’s popularity, Hama utilized this standalone narrative to flesh out the emotional motivations and tragic history of the silent commando, grounding the fantastic elements of the military toy franchise in a more somber, character-driven realism.
The issue is widely regarded by comic enthusiasts as a high-water mark for the licensed series, praised for its innovative storytelling techniques and the way it expanded the lore beyond simple action tropes. By focusing on the personal trauma and martial arts training of the protagonist, the creative team elevated the comic from a mere marketing vehicle for Hasbro’s action figures into a respected piece of 1980s comic book canon. Its lasting influence on the character's legacy has ensured that this specific issue remains a cornerstone for collectors of the G.I. Joe comic series.
