Where it came from
Grendel #12 was published in 1987 as part of the initial Comico Comics run of Matt Wagner’s long-running independent series. As the final installment of the 'Devil by the Deed' arc, it served as a definitive moment in the series' early history, shifting the narrative focus and cementing the anthology-style progression of the Grendel mantle through various hosts and eras.
Matt Wagner both wrote and illustrated this issue, utilizing his signature stark, expressionistic style to explore the darker themes of legacy and sociopathy that define the franchise. The work was met with critical praise for its innovative approach to comic storytelling, as Wagner moved away from traditional superhero tropes to experiment with non-linear timelines and the exploration of an antagonist as a philosophical force.
