Where it came from
Grendel #21 was published by Comico in 1987 as part of the acclaimed Devil by the Deed storyline, which explored the cyclical nature of the Grendel persona. Written and illustrated by Matt Wagner, this issue stands as a pivotal moment in the series, helping to solidify the character's legacy in independent comics during a period when the medium was beginning to experiment with more sophisticated, noir-inspired narratives.
Wagner's design for this issue reflects his signature sharp, high-contrast aesthetic, utilizing stark shadows and stylized figure work to emphasize the psychological weight of the Grendel mantle. The work was well-received by critics and readers of the era, who valued the creator-owned independence of the title and the way it subverted traditional superhero tropes to focus on themes of obsession and violent legacy.
