Where it came from
Grendel #28 was published by Comico Comics in 1989 as part of the Grendel series created by Matt Wagner. This issue occupies a pivotal place in the larger Grendel mythos, continuing the exploration of the character's legacy through the lens of a sophisticated, genre-bending narrative that shifts from urban noir to futuristic dystopian themes.
Matt Wagner designed the series to deconstruct the concept of the anti-hero, utilizing a distinctively sharp, expressionistic visual style that emphasizes shadows and kinetic movement. The issue was received as a hallmark of independent comics during the late 1980s, praised for its willingness to move away from traditional superhero archetypes toward a more literary and experimental storytelling approach.
