Hack/Slash: Body Bags #1

Hack/Slash: Body Bags #1, released in 2005, serves as a crossover one-shot bridging Tim Seeley’s horror-fantasy series Hack/Slash and Jason Pearson’s celebrated noir-inspired action series Body Bags. The issue was conceived to expand the narrative universe of Cassie Hack, a survivor of slasher-movie killers, by pairing her with the cynical, lethal father-daughter bounty hunter duo of Panda and Clown. Published by Devil's Due, the collaboration functioned as a narrative experiment, blending the stylistic slasher-tropes of the Hack/Slash brand with the gritty, high-octane aesthetic defined by Pearson's work.

The visual design of the issue leaned heavily into the distinct art styles of both creators, emphasizing a gritty, kinetic aesthetic that was emblematic of the mid-2000s independent comic scene. Jason Pearson, who wrote and illustrated the Body Bags segment, sought to maintain the cynical, hyper-violent characterizations that earned his series a cult following. The reception among fans of both properties was largely positive, as it successfully managed to capture the dark humor of Seeley’s writing while grounding the characters in the tough, noir-influenced environment typically inhabited by the Body Bags protagonists.
