Hai to Gensō no Grimgar #2

Hai to Gensō no Grimgar, Volume 2, continues the light novel series written by Ao Jūmonji and illustrated by Eiri Shirai. Originally published in Japan in 2013 by Overlap Bunko, the series emerged during a period of rising interest in the isekai genre, though it distinguished itself by focusing on the gritty, realistic psychological struggle of characters trapped in a fantasy world rather than idealized heroism. The second volume picks up immediately after the initial group dynamic is established, exploring the consequences of the party's first encounters with combat.

Eiri Shirai’s watercolor-inspired character designs provide a soft, dreamlike aesthetic that contrasts sharply with the harsh, survival-based narrative tone. This juxtaposition became a signature of the series, drawing readers into a world that feels both fragile and dangerous. The second installment was well-received for deepening the interpersonal bonds between the protagonists and cementing the series' reputation for grounded, character-driven storytelling within a genre often dominated by faster-paced action.
