Hank Howard, Pizza Detective: A Slice of Life #1

Hank Howard, Pizza Detective: A Slice of Life #1 emerged in the early 1990s as part of the independent comic book movement, a period characterized by experimental storytelling and niche genre subversion. Created as a lighthearted noir parody, the series centers on a private investigator who solves mysteries while operating out of a pizza parlor, blending hard-boiled detective tropes with culinary-themed humor.

The character and art style were conceived by independent creators looking to tap into the era's appetite for quirky, self-published anthology-style books. While the series remains a deep-cut curiosity within the small-press scene rather than a mainstream hit, it is appreciated by collectors for its commitment to a specific, whimsical premise and the distinct, rough-hewn aesthetic common to self-published zines of that creative climate.
