Where it came from
Harley Quinn #1, published in 2000, marked the character's transition from a breakout star of Batman: The Animated Series into her own ongoing comic book series. DC Comics launched this title to capitalize on the immense popularity of the character, who had been created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm years earlier. The series was designed to explore her psyche independent of the Joker, placing her in a standalone role within the Gotham City criminal underworld.
The creative team for this debut featured writer Karl Kesel and artist Terry Dodson. Their approach focused on blending dark humor with high-energy action, establishing a distinct visual language that leaned into Harley’s chaotic nature. Upon release, the issue was well-received by fans of the animated series who were eager to see the character fleshed out in the print medium, cementing her status as a permanent fixture in the DC Universe.
