Where it came from
Hawkworld #2, published by DC Comics in 1989, is part of the seminal three-issue prestige format limited series written and illustrated by Timothy Truman. This project served as a definitive reboot of the Hawkman mythos, moving away from the character's traditional origins to offer a grittier, sociopolitical narrative set on the planet Thanagar. Truman aimed to provide a darker, more complex atmosphere, heavily influenced by science fiction aesthetics and the thematic weight of colonial power dynamics.
The series was critically acclaimed for its bold visual style and ambitious storytelling, which successfully revitalized the character for a modern audience. Truman’s intricate, hyper-detailed linework, paired with Enrique Alcatena’s distinctive inks, established a distinct aesthetic that distinguished Hawkworld from mainstream superhero fare of the era. The success of this limited series was so significant that it directly led to the launch of an ongoing monthly Hawkworld series shortly thereafter.
