Healthy Hairy Scary #1

Healthy Hairy Scary #1 emerged during the mid-1990s as part of an educational comic series designed to demystify health and hygiene topics for younger readers. Created by the California Department of Health Services, the series utilized a whimsical, anthropomorphic approach to illustrate complex biological concepts, such as the life cycles of parasites and the mechanics of illness, with the goal of making public health information accessible and less intimidating to elementary-aged children.

The visual identity of the series was defined by stylized, expressive illustrations that leaned into the 'gross-out' aesthetic popular in children's media at the time. By framing head lice and similar health concerns as 'hairy' but manageable characters, the designers aimed to replace stigma with scientific literacy. The issue was primarily distributed through school health programs and clinics, and it remains a curious artifact of 1990s public health outreach that prioritized visual engagement to foster community hygiene habits.
