Hebi Oba-san #1

Hebi Oba-san, or The Snake Old Woman, first appeared as a serialized manga in the late 1950s, representing a significant work in the history of Japanese kashihon (rental manga). Created by Kazuo Umezu, the series is widely regarded as a foundational text in the genre of Japanese horror comics, blending psychological dread with the grotesque imagery that would later define his iconic style.

The character design and the eerie, atmospheric storytelling were intended to unsettle readers of the rental libraries where these books were distributed. Umezu utilized stark, high-contrast black-and-white panels to emphasize the uncanny nature of the titular character. Upon its release, the series helped establish Umezu's reputation as a master of the macabre, influencing generations of manga artists and solidifying the 'creepy old woman' archetype in modern folklore.
