Where it came from
Published in August 1994, Hellblazer #80 serves as a pivotal entry in the long-running Vertigo series featuring the occult detective John Constantine. This issue is part of the lauded creative run by writer Jamie Delano, who was instrumental in shaping the gritty, cynical tone of the character. The narrative reflects the dark, mature themes characteristic of the early Vertigo imprint, exploring psychological horror and social commentary embedded within the supernatural urban landscape.
The cover art and interior style encapsulate the aesthetic transition of the 1990s comic book industry, moving toward more experimental and grounded visual storytelling. Delano's approach to Constantine emphasized his role as a flawed, anti-heroic figure navigating a morally ambiguous world. The issue remains a significant piece for collectors of the original run, representing the complex character studies that established Hellblazer as a cornerstone of British comic influence on American mainstream publishing.
