Where it came from
Published in December 1973, Hero for Hire #16 serves as a pivotal installment in the Luke Cage saga, written by Steve Englehart with artwork by Billy Graham and George Tuska. This issue is particularly notable for featuring the debut of Bill Foster as the Black Goliath, an addition that expanded the cultural footprint of Marvel's urban-focused street-level comics during the Bronze Age of comic books.
The creative direction of the series during this period leaned into a blend of social realism and traditional superhero tropes, aiming to distinguish Cage from the classic caped crusader archetype. By introducing characters like Black Goliath, the creative team sought to build a more diverse and interconnected universe within the pages of a solo title, a move that was generally well-received by readers for its commitment to character growth and expanding the mythos of Marvel's street-level heroes.
