Where it came from
Hero for Hire #9, published by Marvel Comics in April 1973, features the character Luke Cage, a street-level hero navigating the shifting cultural landscape of 1970s New York. Created by Archie Goodwin and George Tuska, the series emerged during a period when Marvel was exploring diverse protagonists and Blaxploitation-inspired narratives to expand its reach and reflect the gritty urban environment of the era.
The issue is notable for its classic cover art and the internal development of Cage’s persona as a ‘hero for hire,’ balancing traditional superhero tropes with the personal stakes of a man clearing his name. While the series was often seen as an experimental title at the time, it eventually solidified Cage's place in the Marvel canon, garnering lasting appreciation from fans and historians for its stylistic departure from the typical masked crusader aesthetic.
