Higan no Hotaru #1

Higan no Hotaru, authored by manga artist Nikki Asada, first emerged in the pages of the shojo magazine LaLa. Created during a period when supernatural romance themes were experiencing a significant resurgence in Japanese manga, the series explores the intersection of spirits and human life. The narrative follows a protagonist who can see ghosts, a classic trope in the genre that Asada utilizes to examine themes of grief, memory, and the emotional tether between the living and the departed.

The character designs and aesthetic direction for the series reflect the delicate, atmospheric style characteristic of the LaLa stable, emphasizing expressive linework and poignant character interactions. Upon its debut, the series was received as a gentle, heartfelt contribution to the supernatural drama genre, praised by readers for its evocative visual storytelling and the introspective nature of its world-building, which avoids typical action-heavy spectacle in favor of quieter, more personal stakes.
