Hyakkiyakō no Hanayometachi #1

Hyakkiyakō no Hanayometachi, written and illustrated by Kairi Sorano, debuted in the mid-2000s as a notable entry in the supernatural shōjo manga genre. The series draws heavily from traditional Japanese folklore, specifically the concept of the Hyakki Yagyō, or the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons. By centering the narrative on the marriage contracts between humans and supernatural entities, the work explores themes of fate and identity through a dark, aestheticized lens characteristic of the period's atmospheric manga.

The design of the volume reflects a deliberate commitment to gothic-influenced romanticism, with Sorano’s character designs emphasizing flowing lines and intricate, ornate patterns that heighten the otherworldly nature of the demons. Upon its release, the series was well-received by readers drawn to the fusion of ethereal, melancholic storytelling and high-contrast, expressive art. It remains a recognized example of a manga that successfully weaves indigenous mythological tropes into contemporary shōjo serializations.
