I Hate Fairyland #2

I Hate Fairyland #2 was published by Image Comics in late 2015 as the second installment of Skottie Young’s darkly comedic creator-owned series. The book centers on Gertrude, a foul-mouthed, middle-aged woman trapped in a saccharine fantasy world she has been unable to escape for decades. The series emerged during a period when Young was gaining significant acclaim for his stylized, whimsical variant covers, and this title allowed him to fully lean into the juxtaposition of adorable aesthetics with extreme, cynical violence.

The visual identity of the issue is defined by Young’s signature high-energy linework and vibrant, candy-colored palettes, which serve to heighten the irony of the protagonist's grim situation. Upon its release, the series was received as a refreshing subversion of traditional fairy tale tropes. Critics and readers noted the book's clever pacing and its ability to blend gross-out humor with professional-grade cartooning, firmly establishing it as a cult hit within the independent comic scene.
