Il Segno di Zorro #v. 5 no.21

Il Segno di Zorro was a prominent Italian comic book series published by Edizioni Audace, the predecessor to the modern Sergio Bonelli Editore. Emerging in the post-war era, the series adapted the swashbuckling adventures of the masked vigilante Don Diego de la Vega for an Italian audience. During the 1950s, these publications were integral to the golden age of fumetti in Italy, providing readers with serialized, action-oriented narratives that blended classic pulp sensibilities with the distinct visual style of mid-century Italian illustration.

The artistic direction for these issues often fell to established illustrators of the period, who sought to capture the kinetic energy of Zorro’s duels and his clever outsmarting of colonial authorities. The design reflected the pulp tradition of the time, characterized by bold line work and dramatic cover art intended to stand out on crowded newsstands. These issues are now regarded as significant artifacts of mid-century European pop culture, representing a specific moment when American mythmaking was being translated and reimagined through a uniquely Italian lens.
