Iron Man #187

Iron Man issue 187, published in October 1984, arrived during a transitional and highly regarded era for the title. Written by Denny O'Neil and illustrated by Luke McDonnell, this issue is a significant installment in the 'Iron Monger' arc, which saw Obadiah Stane systematically dismantling Tony Stark's life and company. The creative team focused on the psychological toll of Stark's alcoholism and professional downfall, grounding the superhero narrative in a gritty, character-driven realism that defined Marvel's output during the mid-eighties.

The design of this era reflects a pivot toward more mature storytelling, with McDonnell’s clean, kinetic lines helping to elevate the tension between Stark and Stane. By moving away from traditional villain-of-the-month tropes, the narrative focused on a slow-burn takeover, leading to the eventual debut of the Iron Monger armor. The issue remains a favorite among collectors for its pivotal role in reshaping the status quo of the Marvel Universe and its contribution to one of the most iconic villainous arcs in the character's publication history.
