Jaguar God #1

Jaguar God #1 was published in 1997 by Amber Graphics, emerging during the peak of the 1990s independent comic book boom. Created by writer and artist Guy Davis, the series serves as a dark, atmospheric exploration of Mesoamerican mythology fused with contemporary horror elements. It follows the narrative of a young protagonist caught in a cycle of ancient, ritualistic violence, reflecting the creator's signature intricate line work and penchant for grotesque, highly stylized character designs.

The reception of the series was largely driven by Davis's established reputation for visual storytelling, particularly his work on titles like The Sandman Mystery Theatre. Critics praised the first issue for its moody aesthetic and commitment to world-building, noting that it stood apart from the superhero-heavy market of the era. The work remains a significant entry in the 1990s indie horror canon, valued by collectors today for its distinct art style and thematic departure from mainstream comic tropes.
