Jonah Hex #9

Jonah Hex #9, published in 1978, emerged during the height of DC Comics' experimentation with genre titles beyond the standard superhero fare. As part of the ongoing Jonah Hex series, which debuted in 1977, this issue continued the adventures of the scarred, cynical anti-hero in the American Old West. The series was created by writer Michael Fleisher and artist Tony DeZuniga, whose grit-heavy aesthetic helped distinguish the character from the more idealized western protagonists of previous decades.

The creative direction for the series focused on a morally ambiguous protagonist, moving away from traditional western tropes to embrace a darker, more nihilistic tone. This approach resonated with readers who favored the hard-boiled storytelling style of the era. The issue itself is noted for its role in maintaining the consistent narrative momentum of the series, which was influential in establishing the 'weird western' subgenre that would later be further expanded upon by DC's Vertigo imprint.
