Jūsansai no Tanjōbi Kōgō ni Narimashita. #1

Jūsansai no Tanjōbi Kōgō ni Narimashita. (I Became the Empress on My Thirteenth Birthday) originated as a light novel series written by Ishiro Kisaragi, which began serialization on the user-generated publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2017. Following its online success, the series was acquired for print publication by Kadokawa, with illustrations provided by Shiina Yū. The story follows a young protagonist who finds herself thrust into the political complexities of an imperial court, blending fantasy elements with the conventions of the romantic period drama genre common in modern Japanese light literature.

The first volume serves as the foundational introduction to this series, establishing the tone and the high-stakes environment the lead character must navigate. Shiina Yū’s character designs were instrumental in defining the aesthetic of the series, characterized by ornate, period-inspired costuming that reflects the fantasy setting. Upon its release, the volume was well-received within the light novel community for its pacing and the depth of its protagonist’s internal struggle, eventually leading to a manga adaptation that expanded the reach of the franchise.
