Where it came from
Ka-Zar the Savage #31 was released by Marvel Comics in 1984 as part of the ongoing series centered on Kevin Plunder, the lord of the prehistoric Savage Land. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character draws heavily on the Tarzan archetype, and this specific era of the title often leaned into gritty, character-driven storytelling that reflected the shifting landscape of 1980s bronze-age comic books.
The issue features artwork by Val Mayerik, whose style brought a distinct, atmospheric quality to the Savage Land setting. During this period, the creative teams focused on separating Ka-Zar from his traditional supporting cast to explore his isolation and survival instincts, a narrative choice that aimed to provide a more mature tone compared to his earlier, more straightforward adventure appearances.
