Kaminegu-Shimai #1

Kaminegu-Shimai, or Paper Cutout Sisters, is an independent manga series characterized by its distinct aesthetic, which leans heavily into the craft of kirigami and paper-based art motifs. The inaugural issue was created by the Japanese artist and illustrator known as Nekomura, who developed the work within the context of the doujinshi scene. The series emerged as a niche artistic project, focusing on the interplay between two-dimensional illustration and the visual language of physical paper cutouts, aiming to evoke a sense of fragile, tactile nostalgia for readers.

The design philosophy behind the first issue centers on a minimalist, high-contrast visual style that emphasizes negative space and delicate line work. Nekomura intended for the aesthetic to mirror the properties of paper—simultaneously flexible and precise. Upon its initial distribution at small-scale comic conventions in Japan, the work was received by the enthusiast community as a thoughtful exploration of media-blending, often praised by independent art critics for its commitment to a coherent, thematic visual identity that stood out from standard commercial manga formatting.
