Kamiyama-san no Kamibukuro no Naka ni wa #2

Kamiyama-san no Kamibukuro no Naka ni wa, written and illustrated by the artist Esuu, debuted in the mid-2010s as a quirky and imaginative manga series. The story centers on the titular character, Kamiyama-san, who maintains a mysterious and stoic presence by wearing a paper bag over his head at all times. This volume continues the exploration of his daily life, blending comedic slice-of-life tropes with the surreal visual gag of his concealed identity, which serves as a central point of curiosity for the other characters in the narrative.

Esuu’s design choice to utilize the paper bag as a permanent mask allows for a unique juxtaposition of deadpan humor and surprisingly expressive body language. By limiting the character's facial expressions, the artist relies on posture, situational irony, and the reactions of the supporting cast to drive the narrative forward. The series is part of a broader trend of alternative, self-contained manga that prioritize idiosyncratic character concepts and understated, observational comedy over complex world-building or high-stakes action.
