Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru: Tada no Inaka no Kenjutsu Shihan Datta no ni, Taisei Shita Deshitachi ga Ore wo Hōttekurenai Ken #9

Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru originated as a web novel written by Shigeru Sagazaki, which gained enough popularity to be serialized in light novel format starting in 2021. The story follows Beryl Gardinant, a middle-aged swordsmanship instructor in a rural village, whose quiet life is interrupted when his former students—now high-ranking heroes and influential figures—begin to seek him out. This volume serves as a continuation of the narrative adaptation, featuring illustrations by Shiitake that capture the transition from rustic simplicity to the weight of epic fantasy stakes.

The series is part of a trend in Japanese light novels that highlights mature, grounded protagonists who possess immense skill but lack the ambition of typical shonen heroes. The artistic direction aims to juxtapose the humble, weathered appearance of Beryl with the refined and often dramatic designs of his pupils, emphasizing themes of mentorship and legacy. It has been well-received by readers for its sincere exploration of aging and the lasting impact of one's teachings, distinguishing itself within the crowded fantasy landscape.
