Where it came from
Kōkyū Kōhi Monogatari, or The Tale of the Imperial Consort, was serialized in the mid-1990s as a historical shōjo manga series centered on the intricate social dynamics of the Chinese imperial court. The series reflects the decade's fascination with period dramas and the aesthetic of the harem as a setting for psychological tension and political intrigue.
The artwork, characterized by the elegant, flowing lines common to the genre during that era, emphasizes ornate period costumes and expressive character designs. Issue number 2 continues the narrative arc following the protagonist's entry into the palace, further establishing the author's focus on the isolation and competitive nature of life within the imperial walls. It remains a notable example of the historical romance genre as it was represented in monthly manga magazines of the period.
