Kōkyū no Dansōhi: Nazotoki-Musume wa Kōtei no Okiniiri, written by Natsumi Matsuoka, emerged during a period of sustained popularity for Japanese light novel series set in historical or fictionalized imperial courts. The narrative centers on a young woman who assumes a male identity to navigate the complexities of palace life, blending historical drama with mystery-solving elements. This volume was developed to capitalize on the audience's appetite for character-driven intrigue set within the visually evocative aesthetic of an imperial harem.

The character designs and illustrations for the series, provided by Yūichi Murakami, were crafted to emphasize the contrast between the protagonist’s concealed gender and her public persona.
