Le Fantôme #398

Le Fantôme, the French-language iteration of The Phantom, holds a storied place in European comic history as part of the long-running series published primarily by Éditions des Remparts. Beginning in the mid-20th century, these publications introduced Lee Falk’s iconic costumed crime-fighter to Francophone audiences, adapting the original American newspaper strips and comic books for a devoted readership hungry for serialized adventure narratives.

The editorial style for these issues typically focused on maintaining the atmospheric, pulp-noir sensibility of the character, featuring striking, often hand-painted covers that emphasized the Phantom’s persona as a mysterious protector. Issue number 398 stands as a representative example of the mid-period run, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of its era, characterized by classic layout designs and a commitment to preserving the mythos established by Falk and illustrators like Ray Moore and Wilson McCoy.
