Where it came from
Ludwig II, issue number 2, belongs to a historical narrative series centered on the enigmatic life and tragic reign of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Published to examine the intersection of 19th-century royal politics and the monarch's profound, often isolating dedication to artistic patronage and architectural fantasy, the series serves as both a biographical chronicle and an analysis of the 'Fairytale King's' influence on German cultural history.
The creative direction for this series emphasizes a somber, atmospheric visual style intended to evoke the melancholic opulence of Neuschwanstein Castle and the king's psychological interiority. Illustrators and historians collaborated to blend archival imagery with period-accurate aesthetic motifs, aiming to provide readers with a grounded yet evocative portrait of a ruler whose legacy remains deeply intertwined with the shifting tides of the Austro-Prussian era and the decline of absolute monarchy.
