Machine Man #7

Machine Man #7 was published by Marvel Comics in September 1978, during the late stages of a series that began as a spin-off of Jack Kirby’s 2001: A Space Odyssey adaptation. The character, X-51, was originally conceived by Kirby to explore themes of artificial intelligence and human prejudice, and this issue serves as a mid-run installment that leans into the genre-blending style of the late seventies superhero comic.

The issue features work by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Steve Ditko, a creative pairing that shifted the title's tone toward more character-driven, urban mystery narratives. Ditko’s signature moody, sharp-lined aesthetic brought a distinct visual tension to the series, reflecting the era's focus on grounded, sometimes cynical, science fiction tropes that distinguished it from the more operatic cosmic sagas of the decade.
