Where it came from
Mage: The Hero Defined #1 was released in 1997 as the debut issue of the second chapter in Matt Wagner’s long-running epic saga. Following the conclusion of his influential 1980s series Mage: The Hero Discovered, Wagner returned to his protagonist Kevin Matchstick to explore the themes of middle age and the evolution of the reluctant hero. The series was published by Image Comics under the Gorilla imprint, a creative venture that granted authors greater ownership and editorial control over their work.
Wagner designed the series to contrast with the youthful idealism of the original run, utilizing his signature stark, high-contrast ink style to reflect the grit and emotional complexity of his protagonist. The narrative was widely lauded by critics for its maturity and its deconstruction of the superhero archetype, marking a significant moment in the independent comics movement of the late 1990s.
