Mahō Shōjo Madoka☆Magica: The Different Story #1

Mahō Shōjo Madoka☆Magica: The Different Story #1 was released in 2012 as the debut volume of a spin-off manga series based on the original 2011 anime. The series was written and illustrated by Hanokage, an artist who had previously adapted the main television series into manga form. This particular narrative serves as a parallel retelling that focuses heavily on the relationship between Mami Tomoe and Kyoko Sakura, expanding on their history and motivations within the darker framework established by the original production.

The design and artistic direction were heavily influenced by the visual style of the SHAFT-produced anime, utilizing clean line work to maintain the iconic aesthetic of the magical girl genre while emphasizing the series' signature psychological tension. The manga was received by fans as a critical expansion of the franchise’s lore, praised for its character-driven approach to the timeline mechanics established in the series. It remains a notable entry in the expanded Madoka Magica universe, often sought after for its specific narrative insights into the secondary cast.
