Marvel Masterworks #17

Marvel Masterworks volume 17 was released in 1991 as part of an ambitious archival program launched by Marvel Comics in 1987. The series was designed to collect the publisher's earliest and most influential Silver Age comic books in high-quality, hardcover editions, often featuring restored artwork and recoloring that updated the presentation for a modern audience. This specific volume serves as a critical entry in the collection, focusing on the early adventures of the Fantastic Four, a cornerstone property that arguably launched the Marvel Universe in 1961.

The volume features the foundational storytelling of Stan Lee and the dynamic, groundbreaking artwork of Jack Kirby. These stories were originally produced during a period of rapid creative experimentation where Lee and Kirby established the tropes of modern superhero drama, grounding powerful figures in relatable, human conflict. When the Masterworks series began, it was received as a definitive attempt to preserve comic history, eventually becoming a standard format for comic book trade collections that remains in print today.
