Where it came from
Marvel Spotlight #28 was published in June 1976 during a period when Marvel Comics was experimenting with anthology formats to introduce or revitalize unconventional characters. This issue is notable for featuring the Moon Knight, a complex vigilante created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin. The character was designed to explore themes of mental instability and supernatural mystery, distancing him from the more straightforward superhero archetypes popular at the time.
The cover art, illustrated by Al Milgrom, captured the eerie, nocturnal aesthetic that would define the character's early appearances. While the title was intended as a showcase for various Marvel properties, the success of this debut eventually helped propel Moon Knight into his own self-titled series. Contemporary reception focused on the character's unique visual design and the dark, gritty tone that Moench utilized to differentiate him from the rest of the Marvel stable.
