Marvel Super-Heroes #15

Marvel Super-Heroes number 15 was published in July 1968 during a transformative era for Marvel Comics, as the publisher began to experiment with anthology-style storytelling and character debuts. The issue is historically significant for featuring the first appearance of Carol Danvers, who would eventually become Captain Marvel. Written by Roy Thomas with artwork by Gene Colan, the narrative introduced Danvers alongside the alien hero Mar-Vell, grounding their origin in the high-stakes intrigue of a top-secret missile base.

The creative direction for this period reflected the house style established by Stan Lee, emphasizing human-centric drama set against the backdrop of the Space Race and Cold War tensions. Gene Colan’s distinct, atmospheric pencils provided a noir-inspired aesthetic that differentiated the series from the brighter, more conventional superhero art of the time. While the issue was intended to test reader interest in the Captain Marvel concept, it has since achieved status as a cornerstone of Marvel lore due to the lasting evolution of Danvers from a supporting character into a central powerhouse of the comic book universe.
