Metamorpho #16

Published by DC Comics in 1967, Metamorpho #16 arrived during the experimental era of the Silver Age. The series centered on Rex Mason, a protagonist whose tragic, grotesque transformation into an elemental hero offered a stark contrast to the more traditional, square-jawed caped crusaders of the time. The title was originally developed by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon, serving as a vehicle for a more whimsical, surreal, and sometimes satirical take on superhero tropes.

The issue features artwork that maintains the series' reputation for distinctive character design and imaginative, often bizarre environmental settings. By the time this issue was released, the character had already established a niche audience that appreciated the blend of traditional superhero adventure with the eccentric, oddball sensibilities that characterized the mid-sixties DC creative landscape. It remains a representative artifact of the company's willingness to push the boundaries of their archetypal hero templates.
