Where it came from
The Mizuki Shigeru Manga Daizenshū is a massive, comprehensive collection of the legendary manga artist's body of work, published by Kodansha between 2013 and 2015. Issue 70 was produced as part of this monumental editorial project, which sought to compile Shigeru Mizuki's vast output—ranging from his celebrated yokai tales to his more autobiographical and war-related works—into a definitive, chronological archival set.
The design of the collection emphasizes scholarly archival quality, featuring consistent binding and extensive supplementary material that contextualizes Mizuki's evolution as a storyteller. These volumes were released to honor Mizuki's legacy and provide a permanent, accessible record for researchers and fans of his unique surrealist style. The series was met with critical acclaim for its rigorous editing and is considered the gold standard for preserving Mizuki’s significant contributions to Japanese cultural history.
