Monster, written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa, began its serial run in Big Comic Original in 1994. The series emerged during a period when Urasawa was transitioning from more lighthearted work to complex, psychologically driven suspense narratives, reflecting a growing interest in the socio-political landscape of post-reunification Germany. The story follows Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese neurosurgeon working in Düsseldorf, whose life is irrevocably altered after he chooses to save the life of a young boy over a prominent politician, unknowingly setting a serial killer free.

The design and tone of the first issue established a cinematic, grounded aesthetic that deviated from the more fantastical tropes prevalent in manga at the time. Urasawa utilized detailed, realistic architectural renderings of Europe and subtle character expressions to build an atmosphere of dread.
