Where it came from
New Gods #16, published in 1977 as part of the DC Comics revival of Jack Kirby's Fourth World mythos, represents a transitional moment for the series. Following the initial cancellation of the original 1970s run, DC brought the title back with Gerry Conway writing and Don Newton providing pencils. This era sought to re-integrate the New Gods into the broader DC Universe, moving away from the isolated, operatic scope of Kirby's original vision toward more traditional superhero storytelling.
Don Newton’s art is widely regarded as the highlight of this revival, characterized by a clean, classic aesthetic that brought a sense of grounded majesty to characters like Orion and Lightray. While the revival was met with mixed reviews from purists who missed Kirby's distinctively raw energy, it is now appreciated by collectors for its polished execution and its role in keeping the Fourth World concepts relevant during a period when DC was recalibrating its cosmic continuity.
