Nightmask #11

Nightmask #11, released in 1987, was part of the New Universe, an ambitious line launched by Marvel Comics to celebrate the company's 25th anniversary. Created by editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, the line was designed to exist in a world where superpowers emerged suddenly and realistically rather than within the established Marvel superhero canon. The series centered on Keith Remsen, a character who gained the ability to enter people's dreams, navigating a grounded, often gritty reality that distinguished it from the publisher's more fantastical cosmic adventures.

The character of Nightmask was created by Archie Goodwin, with issue #11 featuring the work of writer Eliot R. Brown and artist Tony Salmons. The design and narrative tone were meant to explore psychological themes and urban intrigue, moving away from traditional hero tropes. While the New Universe struggled to find a long-term audience and was largely considered a commercial disappointment by the time the series concluded, Nightmask garnered a cult following for its unconventional storytelling and distinct visual identity, which stood out from the brightly colored comics of the late 1980s.
