Okuriya Vanargand #1

Okuriya Vanargand is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akai Higasa. First appearing in the pages of Monthly GFantasy, the series emerged during a period where dark fantasy and supernatural themes were prominent in the shonen and seinen markets. The narrative centers on a protagonist tasked with the grim responsibility of ferrying the spirits of the deceased, drawing upon motifs of folklore and mythological resonance to explore themes of fate and redemption.

The character design and aesthetic tone reflect Higasa's penchant for atmospheric, gothic-inspired visuals, characterized by sharp linework and evocative shadow play. The first volume functions as an introduction to this somber world, establishing the series' melancholic tone and its central dynamic. It was received as a stylish entry in the supernatural subgenre, praised by readers for its moody art direction and the weight of its thematic explorations of mortality.
