Only the Savage Are Left #1

Only the Savage Are Left #1 emerged from the independent comic landscape of the mid-2010s, created and written by Bronwyn Carlton with illustrations by Simon Bisley. The series was designed as a gritty, post-apocalyptic narrative, drawing inspiration from classic pulp storytelling and the visceral, hyper-detailed aesthetic that defined the darker corners of graphic fiction during that era. It arrived at a time when boutique publishers were increasingly seeking to highlight creator-owned properties that pushed boundaries in both visual style and thematic intensity.

The visual direction of the series leans heavily into Bisley's signature style, characterized by aggressive brushwork, dramatic lighting, and a chaotic, kinetic sense of motion. By focusing on the brutal realities of a world stripped of civilization, the creative team aimed to explore the frayed edges of human morality. The issue was received by the comics community as a stylistically bold entry, often noted for its departure from traditional mainstream superhero aesthetics in favor of a raw, atmospheric presentation.
